About music

Viva La Rock ‘N’ Roll. Paris is the centre of the universe. Jools Holland, Brit television’s Mr Music, played piano on the previously mentioned album track by Mark Perry’s Alternative TV. I must have heard it first when I was around 17 and listening to it now I wonder where all the energy, rough literacy and guts in that music went. I loved and, happily, still love the directness and daring of the best post-punk artists. No point in making out a list of names – you must have noticed there are enough lists in the world right now. But the problem with pop these days is down to most people’s inability to hear music without seeing celebrities… THE EMPEROR had three daughters A, B and C. Daughter C was the youngest and had the softest skin. For some reason she was staying with THE EMPEROR. All futures depended on her royal whims. So, her people arranged a concert, supposedly as a tribute to her father. We believed in music. Even as the nation went bankrupt, and in spite of the fact that musicians had no respect for the people, they seemed honourable to us. Although we had few prospects and felt insecure, the lives of the stars triggered admiration within everyone. Historical background. At about 25 years old POP ICON (also known as COOLIGULA) became King of Pop, the only indirect descendant of MIKE THE FIRST to get his face on a coin. The reign started well, generating several hit singles about imprisonment and exile, as well as an album dedicated to his family. Then, with the help of U2, he put an end to corruption, forcing powerful people to resign in the process. One month after he reached number one, his grandmother died. POP ICON fell seriously ill, with what the press described at the time as “insanity”; there was great mourning at the World Music Awards, mixed with much joy at increasing record sales. Unfortunately, POP ICON forced his stepfather to commit suicide by accusing him of evil stuff. Also, his favourite sister experienced stress-related illnesses. POP ICON and his sister were so close and rumours started to fly that they were the same person. That day we had access to one of ten hundred gardens at the Palace. There was a portrait of THE EMPEROR, a sound system and a chair. The stage was empty for a few minutes. Next, by royal command, POP ICON came on. His clothes were fresh, his hair was well groomed, his expression serene. He was drinking water from the sponsors’ bottle. He bowed to the picture, with a smile. Before singing, he sat down to reflect, then stepped forward with a sense of purpose. POP ICON told us he adored music. He refused to make music without training for 5 years at some academy. He avoided listening to music without advice from established critics and professors. He expected to act in soap operas hereafter. He refused to create music in the present climate. In the manner of the very rich, and with support from the royals, he made his sister vanish and announced his retirement from the business. Re music. We believed in music. But we gave it up for POP ICON.
