AMOR BELHOM DUO "Anytime, anywhen"
Over the 10 years they have known each other Thomas Belhom (percussion's, drums, accordion and voice) and Naim Amor (guitar, voice, violin, sampler) have created a deep bond that can be felt in their music. After travelling all over the world they have settled down in Tucson (Arizona) but they haven't given up on crossing borders. Instead of crossing physical boundaries they are now crossing musical boundaries. Their creations, diving deep in their experiences, are based on a musical dialogue that evolves from improvisations to songs. Nothing seems to be fixed in their world, hence the difficulty to really define what they do. Is it country ? is it punk ? is it pop ? is it jazz ? It is a little bit of everything, it is Amor Belhom Duo.

BAPTISTE "Clumsy Man"
Baptiste were formed in west London at the end of the 90's and have so far released three acclaimed singles drawing favourable comparisons with the Velvet Underground, the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Go Betweens or Moose. The first, a self-financed double a-side, A New Career in a New Town / Icarus was released on their own Linear Records label in 1999. The following year Baptiste signed a one-off single deal with Sandman Records in order to release The Quiet Times b/w A Small Victory. In the spring of 2001 Baptiste returned to their own label to release Kissing With Your Eyes Open b/w A Worthy Grudge Is A Beautiful Thing. Once a month Baptiste host their own club, Uptight, at the Tatty Bogle, Soho. And they are currently recording their debut album, provisionally titled 'A Life So Blue'.

BIG EYES "Soldier Things"
'Big eyes' was inadvertently started by James Green in the autumn of 1999 whilst messing around with instrumental and mini-soundtrack ideas in his bedroom in Leeds. He moved on to meet other musicians and to release some wonderful music through Pickled Egg Records. They received acclaim from the likes of John Peel and Belgian radio station 'Contrasts International', who made it no. 2 in their 'Records of the year'. After touring with the likes of Pram, Daniel Johnson, Herman Dune, or Cinerama, they are back with a new album.

BUCK 65 "Track 8 (You Know The Science)"
Main representative with Sixtoo of the mysterious hip hop scene from Halifax, Buck 65, with its rap between irony and melancoly, has already released a fistfull of precious records. Taken from the irreproachable "Man Overboard", solo album released in the early 2001, the actual track is a good sample of the Canadian's style, which prove that you can remain faithfull to hip hop basics (scratches, diversions, etc...) With adding a unique dimension.

CATHAL COUGHLAN "Now Westlin Winds"
From Microdisney to Fatima Mansion, Cathal Coughlan has left a trace of anger and style in the UK music industry. Now operating solo his music is getting better and better everyday, more in tune with his internal turmoil he delivers the ultimate 21st century crooning experience. His voice comes on a bed of roses every thorn out! Cathal is recording his third solo effort and is currently looking for record labels and or distributors.

JOHN CUNNINGHAM "Happy-Go-Unlucky"
Born in Liverpool (how strange), it's in the nonchalant sweetness of Brighton that John Cunningham expresses his love of delicate pop music. Set on the melody, he reaches the listeners staright in their heart thanks to a fistful of guitar chords and a thin fragile voice. His first album "Shankly Gates" is a rafined and ambitious work rapidly picked out by the intenational press. The next album, "Bringing in the blue", hammers it inwith its luxurious and melancolic landscapes. But this is really "Homeless house", his fourth album, that reveals him to the world. His association with French artist Fugu brings him a new inspiration, and allows us to discover one of his forthcoming album.

DISCOVER "King Sun"
Discover is really the rebirth of one of France's best act of the nineties : "The Yachines". Their melodies are sweet and highly addictive. Inspired by the best of the sixties pop they have evolved to incorporate some new twists and design the perfect soundtrack for a lazy sunday afternoon.

FARINA "Don't Look Down"
Your neighbour across the landing makes crosswords, the one next door collects stamps and you, you watch TV. In order to occupy their weekends, the three members of Fariña prefer knock their educated and smart pop up. The result ? Two singles and one album polished with care and humanity, which recalls opportunely that craft and class can get well together. Go Betweens or Chill fans will appreciate. The proof with "Don't Look Down" : sobriety, beauty, nothing else to add.

KLIMA "And Today's Just Like Tomorrow"
Björk doesn't belong anymore to our world, Stina Nordenstam never wanted to, the false siamese sisters from Pooka have split up and anyway, Angèle David-Guillou, aka Klima, can take all of them in arm-wrestling. Our new fairy, already seen as an impish imp with Laudanum or as an icy shadow with Piano Magic, lives litteraly in the landscapes of her climatic compositions, without extra effect.

LIFESTYLE "Doorway to Norway"
Lifestyle is a bunch of straightforward, no fuss guys from the states. When asked to describe their band they said : Lifestyle are an electro-pop band from America. They love you. To give you a little more details they are swinging fans of New Order who want to share their sense of party and have already released several brilliant EP's on Teenage USA. They are looking for a European distribution. Don't let them pass you by.

MATTHIEU MALON "Avant"
We could say that he has been around a bit, in various outfits, various disguises. Always passionate about one thing though, passionate about music. Music that reflects life in its brightest and bleakest moments, music of the extremes, extreme feelings, extreme happiness, extreme pain. After a first album called "Froids" (colds) and an acclaim adventure in the land of electronic music under the disguise of laudanum (the album called "System:on" is available through Monopsone) Matthieu comes back in a furore, lets his guitar loose on fiery beats and gives us a lesson in poetry. Life's a bitch and then you die they say. For Matthieu Malon life's a bitch and then you write gorgeous songs.

MORNING STAR "Humming Song"
Behind Morning Star hides Jess D. Vernon. With his English weirdo attitude, he is a complete artist (composer, guitarist, violonist and singer), an impressive performer to discover. We already saw him in Invisible Pair of Hands, one of the Bristol scene spearheads heard a few years ago, but Morning Star is his more personal plan. Until his first album released in 1999, Jesse showed us his inclinations for 50's and 60's rock and folk musics and for folk music from every horizon (South America, Central and meridional Europe). With the second album, "My Place in the Dust", whose "Humming Song"(here in an alternative version) is taken from, Morning Star confirms his ability to stray from the beaten track.

PAPAS FRITAS "Love Just Don't Quit"
Some of the fex good pop times of the nineties, we owe them to the three Americans from pApAs fritAs and their three albums, from the classic "pApAs fritAs" to the classic "Building and Grounds" (album of the year 2000 according to the POPnews reviewers) and the noisy and regenerating "Helioself". So we are vey impatient to wait for the release of a trio fourth album, and Tony Goddess, educated leader of the band, magnanimous, helps us to wait with a great track, "Love Just Don't Quit", simple and beautiful, made in the same material as Big Star's "Thirteen". Boston, new Mecca of la Haute-Couture ?

PELV'S "Even if the sun goes down (I'll surf)"
Hailing from sunny Brazil PELV's are oddballs that prefer Big Star's power pop to Carlos Jobim samba. Love, Pavement and the Teenage Fanclub are their main influence and ecstatic, guitar drenched, melody is their game. Resistance to their groove is useless as the sun shines out of their guitars. "Even If The Sun Goes Down (I'll Surf)" is an edit version of the title track of their 3rd album. How have they managed to release 3 albums without being notice is still a mystery to us but we hope that this effort will open your eyes.

RENZ "Two Friends"
The new project from micro-label Vergo offers us to follow an episode of the life of Torp ranon, imaginary character created by Renz. Just like his label predecessor (T.), Renz models himself on the production's principles (analogical tape-recorder, a mixing desk, some balance
microphones and no record dead-line) for a tortuous, tormented and outstanding concept album. "Two Friends" is taken from the recording session of this album, "Wowox" (to be released in the course 2002).

TEMPER "I was nearly married (early version)"
Temper is a French power trio that manages to mix tender pop (Elliott Smith) and tension rock (Television, Voivoids...). They are feeding on raw power and tension and the result is awesome, each song is balancing on the edge of sanity and "I was nearly married" is a prime example of their sharp edge. The guitar is rough and cold and the voices warms up slowly before fading out to a ghostly piano. Angst ridden music doesn't come any better than this.

TOKYO/OVERTONES "Then"
Formed in 1999, in le Havre's fog, the Tokyo/overtones don't know where to go. Rock, Pop, Electro, why having to choose, when you are talented for these styles ? Genious dabblers, the Tokyo/overtones shows their rafined taste for muggy atmospheres and touchy melodies. Made on classical skeleton, their songs live and go in surprising directions. They are only guided by the emotion they are trying to create. Stripped vocals, thrifty but moving arrangemnents, it's hard to recover from an encounter with the Tokyo/overtones.

UTAH CAROL "Silver Space Rocket"
Utah Carol, a duo consisting of Grant Birkenbeuel and JinJa Davis, is one of Chicago, USA's promising independent bands. Utah Carol's songs combine vintage organs, layered orchestral instruments, synthesizers, loops, slide, electric and acoustic guitars, and lush instrumentation.
JinJa and Grant have been writing songs together since 1995 and released their debut album "Wonderwheel" in 1999 and "Comfort for the Traveler" in 2001. JinJa and Grant write the music and the lyrics as well as produce, arrange, perform, publish and self-release their songs at their studio and publishing company, Stomping Ground. The band's name comes from a traditional country ballad made famous by music legend Marty Robbins, about a cowboy who dies trying to save his friend from a stampede. Fans of The Beach Boys, Yo La Tengo and The Carter Family will enjoy the beautiful, wistful, country-tinged sensuel melodies of Utah
Carol. The band is currently working on their third full-length album which they hope to release in 2002.
